Yessir I rode a bicycle donated by Trek from Valparaiso, IN to Washington D.C. to play my song in front of the White House. I came through K street playing to the criminal lobbyists after a nearly 700 mile trip. I wasn’t a cyclist before this trip either, I didn’t even train for the ride. Sometimes when you have resolve and passion that’s all the fuel you ever need!

The Tesla Roadster electric car is dead (see update below). Tesla Motors announced Thursday it would stop taking orders for the $109,000 vehicle in two months, concentrating instead on the development of its next-generation Model S electric car, a four-door sedan that will cost about half as much.

The iconic Tesla Roadster, now in version 2.5, has been a specialty two-seater from the get-go. It impressed reviewers with its snappy acceleration, sporty carbon-fiber body designed (update: and built) by Lotus, and relatively long 245-mile-rated range. But that $109,000 sticker price for the hand-built car — a “base price” that usually went much higher with sport options — proved too steep for the mass market.

For mainstream drivers, Tesla announced plans for a lower-priced electric car in 2008. The Model S will sell for around $57,400 (up from its previously announced $49,000) when it’s ready for sale in mid-2012, according toThe New York Times.

We caught our first glimpse of a flashy Model S prototype at the Consumer Electronics Show last January, where we were awestruck by its sleek design and huge instrument panel powered by an Nvidia graphics processor.

Update: While the Tesla Roadster as we know it is on its way out, a Tesla Motors spokesperson tells us “a version” of it is coming back: “The Roadster will always be the cornerstone of Tesla, and we look forward to bringing back a version of the supercar that takes full advantage of our advanced electric powertrain in the next several years.”

San Francisco announced yesterday that it will be placing free electric-vehicle chargers around the city, the SF Examiner reports. The chargers will be available in 20 city-owned garages, including the garages at San Francisco International Airport. They’re not meant to be electric car owners’ sole source of power, but to let them refuel when they’re not at home, since the currently available electric cars (like the Nissan Leaf) can only travel 100 miles or less without a recharge. The new stations will be free to use through 2013.

Government grants are supporting the installation of the electric-car charging stations in San Francisco, as they are elsewhere: Oregon, for instance, will soon host 15,000 stations around the state, some of them public. And the first rapid-charging station in Latin America was publicly inaugurated last week in Chile—although electric cars aren’t actually available in Chile yet.

President Obama announced a goal of having a million electric vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015 in this year’s State of the Union address.

An enterprising group of gas station hackers have been making their way around Southern California. Their latest heist saw them speed away with 528 gallons of gas priced at $4.28 per gallon from a Mobil station in Pasadena.

How’d they do it? CBS News is reporting that a hacked “credit card or other mechanism” was used to activate the pump and release the gas sometime after 2 AM PST, which the four masked individuals then funneled into flat containers aboard an unmarked white pickup truck. Police are saying that a similar theft occurred two weeks ago in Studio City that saw matching culprits make off with 1,700 gallons.

Mind you, $2259.84 in refined petroleum may not be the easiest way to make a quick buck in the streets, but with gas prices skyrocketing to record levels, it’ll be interesting to see if copycat gas hackers start popping up elsewhere.
